Thousands in South Texas Assess Damage from Hurricane Ike
Galveston Assesses Damage
Residents of Galveston who weathered Hurricane Ike have been urged to leave the city. The storm-ravaged city does not have enough clean drinking water to serve the needs of the 15,000 to 20,000 people who stayed on the island. Local spokespeople said the city's resources are stretched to the max, and it could be a month before electricity is restored.
Communities Throughout South Texas Without Power
Millions of residents of Houston and many other cities will wait several days before power is restored.
Possible Flooding along Missouri, Mississippi Rivers Expected
Authorities are warning of possible flooding along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers as weekend rains drained off the land. More than 2 million people in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana were without power on Monday as hurricane-force winds raked the region, the AP reported.
Floods
Hit Several Areas
June 18th: Gainesville, Texas
Gainesville, Texas was hit by a
flood and was declared a state of emergency. Approximately
640 people are now FEMA registered.
Eight of the local nonprofits were severely impacted,
leaving a high demand of Urgently Needed Products (see
left).
July: Southeastern Kansas
Heavy rains between June 30th and
July 4th left many communities in southeastern
Kansas flooded.
At
least thirty homes in Neodesha were completely detroyed
and approximately 130 homes were seriously affected.
Surrounding communities of Fredonia, Coffeyville, and
Independence were also affected.
Coffeyville's flooding was compounded by oil from
the local
refinery
leaking
into the flood
waters.
Residents in Neodesha and the surrounding
area are in need of building materials including: lumber,
sheetrock, electrical wiring and fixtures, plumbing,
floorcovering,
appliances, bathroom fixtures, and paint.
