Labor Day Coined as the "unofficial end of summer," Labor Day is observed every first Monday of September, simply as a celebration of the working class. The very first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday,
September 5, 1882, in New York City by The Central Labor Union, an early trade union organization, with a parade and entertainment for the workers and their families. Trendsetting, The Central Labor Union urged other similar organizations to do the same, and they followed suit. By 1894, nearly 30 states had already adopted this holiday in honor of workers and in that same year, Congress officially crowned the first Monday of September as a legal holiday! Whether you're resting this weekend or taking a mini vacation, pat yourself on the back for all the hard-work you do. This is a day for us! Do you love running and making a difference in the community?
Register to run in Gifts In Kind's, first-ever, 5K race, The
Charity Charge! In addition to a race, we've invited 20 nonprofits in the
Washington DC Metro area to participate in a post-race community fair, allowing
them an opportunity to showcase their programs and services to potential
volunteers and donors.
We hope to attract 700 runners and 300 spectators to the
event-but can only do so with your help. Please spread the word and join us for
the fun on Saturday, October 9th, 10:00am at Cameron Run Park in
Alexandria, Virginia. There will be food, awards, and entertainment!

50 Words for 50 Blankets - Free Donation for ...

Together with Blanket America, Gifts In Kind
International has launched a national campaign for our Gifts In Kind
members, 50 for 50: 50 words for 50 blankets that will ship
directly to the winning nonprofit for free. We'll be working with cities across
the country each month to meet our goal of distributing a total of 1 MILLION
blankets. This week, we are searching for a nonprofit in the Chicago, IL area to receive blankets on September 20.
This week, Aeon in St. Paul will receive 50 free blankets with the following 50 word statement:
"Twenty-six, twenty-two and twenty-nine - paltry numbers
representing the average HIGH temperatures in Minneapolis for December, January
and February. To live in the Twin Cities means to survive below-freezing
weather for three months each year. Warmth is of vital importance, and
blankets are not a luxury, but a basic human necessity."

Tell us in 50 words or less why your organization
needs 50 blankets and explain what type of impact the blankets will have in
your community. The winning charity will be required to send a photo and allow
us to interview one of their blanket recipients.
